We had an amazing turnout considering the weather was at best “damp” with 59 participants attending the “Everest Challenge”.  The challenge was to climb Everest, the equivalent of, by cycling or running up Westbury White Horse.

The runners and riders managed a staggering 101 ascents equivalent to scaling Everest 1 ½ times.  Although the event was organised jointly by Westbury Wheelers and Westbury Run England Group many other clubs sent representation including: Avon Valley Runners, Hot Chilli Tri Club, DB Max Tri and many other unattached honed athletes.  We charged £3 for the pleasure of each painful ascent and put them up against the clock.

The idea came from Founder member of the Wheelers, John Weaire. The main purpose of the event was to have fun and raise money for Joss Tilley’s new lightweight wheelchair through the www.help4joss.org appeal.  After the event we held a Raffle in the Lopes Arms and in total managed to raise an incredible £650.

Sam Pictor was the fastest at both the Cycle and run, yes many athletes decided to ride then run it.  His bike time was 5 min 43 secs and he ran it in 7min 53 secs.

Leanne won the ladies cycle in a time of 7 min 51 secs and Melanie Nicholls won the ladies run in 11 min 10 secs.

Westbury Run England Group leader, Sarah Sims and Melanie Nicholls ran the all-important 65th Ascent (The height of Everest) together holding the St. Georges flag.  Captain of the Westbury Wheelers, Simon Hurd cycled the 100th ascent and Jake Coward cycled the last (101st) ascent up the hill.

Big, Big thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their time the team was: John Weaire (Who’s idea it was), Neil Brocklehurst (Mobile coffee café), Gems Healing Hands (Sports massage therapy), Katie Pope (photographer), Lynsey Doel (photographer), Ryan Baggs (photographer), Martin Jeffrey (photographer), Fiona Price, Ben Price, Ken Price, Amanda Carroll, Lois Selby, The Lopes and White Horse Pottery.
